South Africa are always a dangerous team at home. Even more so in pink day cricket. South Africa have been hosting 'Pink Day' ODIs for a decade for breast cancer awareness, with the hosts winning 9 of the first 11 matches.
However, on the first 'Pink Day' cricket of the new season, India suffered against South Africa. Arshdeep Singh and Abesh Khan bowled the Proteas all out for just 116 runs. India reached the target with 8 wickets and 200 balls in hand. This is South Africa's second biggest loss with a ball in ODIs.
South Africa faced an uncomfortable record at Wanderers in Johannesburg in the first innings of the match. Batting first, the Proteas lost 6 wickets for just 52 runs, the lowest loss of 6 wickets at home in their ODI history.
Later, the team's run reached three digits with Andile Fikwao's effort but had to stop at 116 runs. This is South Africa's lowest total against any team at home. The previous one was 118 against India in 2018.
Two Indian pacers, Arshdeep and Abesh, were instrumental in bowling out South Africa for their lowest total. Earlier, Arshdeep, who did not get any wicket in three ODIs, picked up 5 wickets for 37 runs in this match. He bowled 8 overs with 3 maidens and 4 wickets for 27 runs.
In the run chase, India lost Ruturaj Gaikwad to Wyan Mulder in the fourth over. However, Shreyas Iyer created pressure on the Protea bowlers against the anointed Sai Sudarshan.
The duo's 73-ball 88-run second-wicket partnership was stopped by Iyer's dismissal off Fiquaw. Iyer scored 52 runs off 45 balls before returning. Sudarshan left the field unbeaten on 55 runs off 43 balls.
South Africa lost the match with 200 balls to spare when Tilak Verma picked up India's winning run off the fourth ball of the 17th over. Earlier in 2008 they lost against England by 215 balls.
